Mat vs. Reformer Pilates: Which Should You Start With
Share
Booking your first Pilates class and seeing both "mat" and "reformer" options can leave you stuck before you've even picked a studio. Here's the honest breakdown of what's actually different, and which one makes more sense to start with.
Mat Pilates
Exactly what it sounds like: bodyweight Pilates done on a mat on the floor, sometimes with small props like a Magic Circle, light hand weights, or a resistance band. No machines involved. It relies entirely on your own body for resistance, which means every exercise is scalable just by how much control and precision you bring to it.
Good for: building foundational body awareness, learning the core principles (breath, alignment, control) without a machine to think about too, and anyone who wants to be able to do a version of this at home with basically no equipment.
Reformer Pilates
Done on the reformer machine, using a sliding carriage and adjustable spring resistance. The springs can either assist a movement or resist it, depending on the exercise, which gives instructors a lot more range to adjust difficulty in real time.
Good for: people who want more resistance variety, extra support for exercises that are harder to control with just body weight, and a workout that can feel more dynamic since the equipment is doing part of the work with you.
So which one should you actually start with
Honestly, either is a fine place to begin, but here's the general logic instructors tend to give. If you want to genuinely learn the fundamentals, breath, core engagement, alignment, before adding a machine into the mix, start with mat. You'll build a foundation that makes reformer classes click faster later. If you're someone who finds bodyweight-only exercises harder to feel or stay motivated through, the reformer's assisted resistance can actually make it easier to feel what your body's supposed to be doing, which some beginners find more approachable, not less.
There's no wrong answer here. Plenty of people start with reformer because that's what their friend does, and pick up mat principles along the way. The" right" starting point is mostly whichever one gets you to actually show up.
The part that matters more than mat or reformer
Whichever you pick, the thing that actually determines whether you stick with it isn't the equipment, it's whether you have people to show up with. That's the whole idea behind Pilates & Lattes Club. 🤍
