Why You Need Grip Socks for Pilates
Share
If you booked your first reformer class and the studio told you to bring grip socks, you're probably wondering if that's actually necessary or just an upsell. It's necessary. Here's why.
It's a safety thing first
Reformer carriages, Cadillac platforms, and studio floors are all smooth by design, and smooth plus bare or regular socked feet equals sliding mid-exercise. Grip socks have silicone or rubber dots on the sole that lock your foot in place, so you can actually press, push, and hold positions without your foot skating out from under you. That matters most during footwork and standing exercises, where you're pressing hard against the foot bar or shoulder rests.
It's also a hygiene thing
Studios are shared spaces. Reformers, mats, and floors get used by dozens of bare feet a day, and grip socks create a barrier between your skin and shared equipment. That's why most studios, including ours, have a straightforward "no socks, no class" policy. It's not about being precious, it's just genuinely more sanitary for everyone.
Regular socks don't actually work
This trips up a lot of first-timers. Regular cotton socks are smooth on the bottom, which means they slide on a reformer carriage even more than bare feet do. If you show up in ankle socks from your gym bag, you'll likely be handed a pair of grip socks at the front desk (or asked to buy some) before you can get on the equipment.
What makes a good pair
Grip coverage across the whole sole, not just a few dots at the heel, since you need traction across your forefoot too. A snug fit so the sock doesn't bunch up mid-movement. And a fabric that actually handles sweat, an hour of reformer work is sweatier than it looks, and cheap synthetic grip socks get damp and slippery fast.
The real takeaway
Grip socks aren't a gimmick or a branded upsell, they're genuinely part of doing Pilates safely and cleanly. Most studios sell them at the front desk if you show up without a pair, so don't stress if it's your first class and you forgot. Just show up. 🤍
Come solo, we promise you'll leave with new ones. This is open to everyone. 🎀
